Pilot Studies

What is a pilot study? Why do a pilot study? When to carry out a pilot study?
A pilot, or feasibility study, is a small experiment designed to test logistics and gather information prior to a larger study, in order to improve the latter’s quality and efficiency

eleven11 + plus, 88 cities infrastructure research, design & development is a large study.

OpticalPerspectiveArchitecture wll be working at each city as a small experiment, gathering information prior to our large study, our intended circuit. The studies based on the concept of Urban Regeneration will focus our research & creative skills into deprived areas of the respectives 88 cities.

‘Seeing from the urbanistic point of view, deprived urban areas are like ‘scars’ into the aerial view of countries and its lands. Working towards urban design solutions to these areas is pretty much to be a healer, an urban healer.’

There is an  interesting article titled ‘The World in slums’ written by Yuri Souza, which clarifies opticalperspectivearchitecture involvement of an issue which needs attention. Even if our collaboration is small we believe our Plan of Action is possible attainable.

‘Urbanism changes Rio de Janeiro from Brazil’s capital to Brasilia. Urbanism design cities like Las Vegas , New Yok, Dubai plus many others and urbanism will help us to improve the conditions of the slams in 88 cities of Brazil’s beautiful & contradictory landscape.’

The globalization of human survival

By Yuri Sousa

In 1940, 30% of the population (approximately 40 million people) lived in cities. Currently, there are already 83% of the population (approximately 140 million people).

Thus, 8 of every 10 Brazilians living in urban centers.

In 2008, the first time in human history, more than half of the world population (3.3 billion people) lived in cities, according to the report of the Population Fund of the United Nations.

In 2030, the number of people living in cities is expected to reach 5 billion, it will consequently increases urban tension, especially in cities.
The image of the twentieth century, associated with skyscrapers and employment opportunities will be in this century, if there isn’t any action, gradually changed to the scenarios of poverty, through the growth of slums, where  lives most of the inhabitants of today’s megacities and 78.2% populations of poor countries.
Along with the slums is a whole range of injustices and cruelties, such as poverty, unemployment, lack of adequate urban infrastructure, lack of sanitation, exposure to toxic waste, spread of diseases like cholera and AIDS.
In this scenario that exposes people to human and environmental degradation, crime is inevitable.
Concerned with the growing of  “world slums” and its global consequences, the U.S. invests in a new army ready to fight, according to one of his strategists, in “failing cities and fierce in the Third World, especially in slum surroundings.” For some Americans, its newest enemies will be criminalized segments of the urban poor’.
The world who believes in peace should tackle these problems by investing in Urban Regeneration projects all over the world, to ‘cure’ the disease of urbanism slams.
jg Co. & communications as  a NGO through opticalperspectivearchitecture 88 cities infrastructure circuit research, design & development is also an influence for  non-for profit enterprises all over the world, since it is a problem which is affecting all major cities around the world and solutions are available.
Yuri Souza also mention:
In Brazil, upper middle class are investing in residentials with high walls and private armies, in order to protect them, ‘ small portion of the population’ from the reality of slum dwellers.
By doing it they deceives themselves, thinking they can protect them from violence with armies or/and investing in urban islands of wealth, such as office towers and luxury residentialshigh walls fortifications.
Our only alternative is to invest in justice and solidarity through social inclusion and environmental development of slum dwellers.

So, a pilot study can reveal deficiencies in the design of a proposed experiment or procedure and these can then be addressed before time and resources are expended on large scale studies.

As the design of our intended circuit is a large project, good research strategy requires careful planning and a pilot study will often be a part of this strategy.

A pilot study is normally small in comparison with the main experiment and therefore provide only limited but useful information on the sources and magnitude of variation of response measures.

It is unlikely, that a pilot study alone can provide adequate data to include in a well designed experiment. A systematic review is an appropriate source of information on variability. The pilot study, however, provide vital information on the process of proposed procedures.

A pilot study may address a number of issues, it is also useful to check and verify that procedures are comprehensible or that the reliability and validity of results are relevant;

A pilot study also is suggested to assess whether the level of intervention is appropriate, to identify the effect of the strategy adopted and the cause of the procedure and the effectiveness of actions to reduce them .

A pilot study has diferent formats and sizes, at moment (March 2012) opticalperspectivearcitecture begin to work ‘virtually’ as its first experiment based on real data with  ‘The Plan of Action, Concept &  Strategic Development’ with Paraisopolis Slums situated in SP – Brazil
